It is said that chance favors the prepared mind. I think that creativity thrifts in cities with a culture that favors innovation in specific areas. This link to an article in the Seattle Times http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2003448151_gateshealth26m.html illustrates the point. The Gates Foundation has made Seattle a center of global health initiatives but that would not have happened if there was not already a concerned internationally oriented culture with lots of small (and underfunded) organizations trying to do useful things that have grown now that the pot of gold is in our backyard. I suspect if it were not for the Seattle culture of helping others that Gates grew up in that he might have spent his billions otherwise. But that is pushing my point because Warren Buffet grew up in Omaha and he is equally dedicated to doing good with his money. However, it is telling that he decided the way to most effectively do it was through a Seattle based foundation.
