I typically despise on-line quizzes but when I saw this one Virgina Postrel’s dynamist blog, I had to give it a try. It’s been more than 20 years since I lived in the New York-New Jersey area, certainly my accent had to change. Much to my chagrin, my results turned out like this:
| What American accent do you have? Your Result: The Northeast Judging by how you talk you are probably from north Jersey, New York City, Connecticut or Rhode Island. Chances are, if you are from New York City (and not those other places) people would probably be able to tell if they actually heard you speak. | | The Inland North | | | Philadelphia | | | The South | | | The Midland | | | Boston | | | North Central | | | The West | |

Give it a try, here.

It nailed me. Inland North (chicago)… Even after years of living in San Francisco, Washington DC, and London England.

Since I’m Canadian, but with strong US ties, I was curious what it would tell me. I have a midland accent or “no accent” according to the survey.

Nailed me as an inland northerner. Although I am from Texas, my parents are from Iowa and Washington State and I have their accent, mostly (unless I go to Texas, when I sound like a Texan).
