While we've come to assume that immigration from Southeast Asia, the Indian subcontinent and Africa is like a spigot we can adjust at will, in the future we'll increasing have to compete for the best and brightest from these places. There are more and more spiky opportunities at home, whether they're in Shanghai, Bangalore, or Cape Town. Your post brings to mind another challenge I think we in the US, Canada, and Europe will encounter in the decades to come.

But living there was tough for me - if you're a creative person, satisfying and inspiring jobs are not easy to come by. Technology is where the money is, but perhaps more artists would stick around if they felt there were more opportunities for them in such a city, if the focus were on developing more sustainable opportunities for the creatives.
