It looks like the University/high tech Research Triangle and its Creative Class had an impact. Perhaps not coincidentally, these are also NC’s largest cities and biggest urban areas.
largest cities:
Charlotte 671,000
Raleigh 375,000
Greensboro 247,000
Durham 217,000
Fayetteville 171,000
So there’s the creative class aspect. There’s also the population centers moving to the urban areas. I don’t know where North Carolina’s Black population centers are, but that’s also probably a factor.
