I would like to emphasis the influence of Lady Gaga. Although she might be disputed as a good singer, she definitely ranks the top as a subject of discussion. Just have a short look on YouTube and you will see that she has a far stretching influence on people, concerning that they think of her while watching videos of other artists. Some people even see her as the embodiment of music. I guess that, if you would count the times her name is mentioned on YouTube, she will perhaps even be more discussed than MJ! Her name at least has more hits on Google than that of Michael Jackson. (But on Google Obama rules the ranks.)

The foundation of celebrity is image, and image is out the window. Celebrities are being found out in every direction, and there is no way to put up a false wall anymore. This is definitely the end of celebrity, and Thank God it is!!! What has Hollywood done for this country, the world? The Hollywood image is responsible for the wars we are in today!!! Thank God the internet is taking it down brick by brick. Constantly revealing plastic surgeries, drug addictions, alcoholism, peversion. It is time Hollywood was exposed for what it always has been – a perverted circus. Besides, I see better looking people on the street nowadays, and what they call a model is abhorring! The world is done with celebrity!

I agree that with the modern technology today, many are becoming famous very fast. Social media indeed can produce more and more celebrities who will supersede the last.

In the trenches of web publishing, we’re all seeing a huge shift to celebrity coverage. So many bloggers cover celebrities because that’s what brings in the traffic.

In hip hop blogging the shift has been incredible over the last five years.

Barack is the biggest current world star and the mixed race angle is interesting but, generally speaking, the biggest world stars of my lifetime have been black, Muhammed Ali, Michael Jackson and Michael Jordan, though Michael Jackson’s identity as a black man gets complicated due to whatever he was up to cosmetically.

But, if you want to discuss the first celebrity, I’d suggest looking at religion and warfare. Buddha, Jesus, that God guy, Alexander the Great. Unless, of course, you define celebrity in a certain way that leaves out such figures.

Maybe you guys are talking about celebrity in a way that cuts out Buddha.

Since you’re playing the academic card here, you should share your definition from the beginning, otherwise you end up with a relatively intelligent barroom exchange.

In the pseudo academic world of Wikipedia:
“A celebrity is a person who is famously recognized in a society.”
