The US is so young that almost everything is related to economic conditions. When do you want to say industrialization started, the 1850's? Bohemias (concentrations of artists) in the US are almost always in big cities, generally in ethnic neighborhoods -- for some reason, many Italian (Greenwich Village, North Beach).
