I am wondering when kids make a college location decision they are also (unwittingly) making a decision about where they will likely get their first job as young single professionals. Did you, or your kids, stay and work where you/they went to college? What impact did graduate school have on where you ultimately chose to live?

Hello,

In the Netherlands it is going pretty well now. We have most of the crisis behind us and we are going forward now.

I concur with Wendy's comment on the government sector - what happens to the correlations when this is adjusted for?

Many of these jobs seem to be "effects" of a diverse economy, which like a diverse investment portfolio provides some balance of risk.

What you call creative class employment is actually a rather diverse range of positions, some or many of which support other areas of the economy. In Washington DC they support a government sector.

Key to employment rebound may be economic diversity in terms of regional "exports" -- if automotive manufacturing is down, but the region also exports video game software, financial management, insurance services as well as has tourism (which is technically an export), and music exports there is a much greater likelihood that one of these industries will be doing okay while manufacturing automobiles is failing.
