Kate,
I understand your dilemma. My partner and I live in Charlotte (the new Atlanta) but, we are looking around as well. I have stayed briefly in other countries (Zambia, Peru, Venezuela, Italy) and am amazed at how backward the USA can be on many issues: public schools, spiritualism, and appreciation of those with "different" views. But I've made some headway on my search for an ideal home, bearing in mind one caveat I'll mention at the end. An amazingly diverse and sophisticated area (for the South) is Raleigh, NC. For example: Raleigh High School convened a mock UN Convention for Homecoming last year where the Israeli-Palestinian conflict was debated with a peaceful resolution! Also, while not in the South, Modesto CA, Seattle WA, Portland OR, and Corvallis OR all have incredible public schools with strong diversity programs. AND, each of these cities boasts a divine school for Ashram Yoga and hold FREE public yoga sessions (in Corvallis on the town square). Check them out. But as for the Caveat for the South, we're probably staying because (and the only advice I can give) is when you are not happy with the situation: Be the change! I think you and your husband (and M and E) are the type of peope we need in the South. I have a deal for you, why don't we search together for Utopia and end up on the same street??? :)

There's more to Atlanta than suburbs. Come live intown if you can afford it! Look at Morningside (real good elementary school), Decatur (technically a suburb so city schools not an issue, but looks more like a 20s streetcar suburb than typical sprawl). Or for a more hard core urban experience (by the dismal standards of the American south) try Midtown.
