The Boulder Model

Vespa. The new S. Born to be square.

We’ve heard lots about the high-tech success stories of Silicon Valley, the Route 128 area around Boston, Austin, and Seattle. In this article, Ben Casnocha outlines how Boulder, Colorado transformed itself from a hippie enclave/college town into a center for innovation and high-tech entrepreneurship.

I suppose it only makes sense – the beloved hippies can also be the computer geeks with the big ideas and willingness to take risks.

When I lived in Boulder in the late 90’s, the big joke was that all the hippies from the 70’s were getting older, digging up the backyard looking for their Bell jars of drug cash, investing it and becoming the community business leaders. All kidding aside, I think Boulder is a fine model for 2nd tier cities. It all boils down to building on your strengths- and never underestimating the power of your city’s quality of life.
