Unequal America

county-levekl HDI.jpg

Here’s a map of the human development of U.S. counties based on factors like income, education, literacy, and health (via (Map Scroll). There’s been some concern about the utility of such combined indexes, still this map provides a powerful visualization America’s enormous social, economic, and geographic divide.

A visual reminder of the fact that history is with us and not something of the past. I’m struck by how often we are encouraged to look to the future when it also makes a lot of sense to think about how we got to this point. As much as things have changed in terms of trying to create an equal playing field,we are still only in the process of making a dent. A map like this is a good way of showing that some of the social issues we face as a country, can be defined and addressed. Conceptualizing the issues can be a first step!

Unequal? Through who’s eyes? I was raised a poor country boy and made millions to become a rich beach front, California Mercedes driving “success”. I choose the country boy life! I have left all the madness and stress, fast pace and pollution for a simple life of family and farming. Don’t judge those who are not where you aspire to be, the reality is they may be enjoying a life that you may never even imagine and will never be lucky enough to experience.
